Background/Purpose: To study the characteristics and prevalence of HBV infection in firsttime voluntary blood donors at the Hematology Center of Viet Tiep Hospital, Hai Phong.
Methods: Cross-sectional study. HBsAg was determined by rapid immunochromatography
and auto luminescent immunoassay.
Results: The rate of HBV infection by the rapid test was 3.0% and the rate increased by
0.4% when performed by immunochemiluminescence. The rate of men with a positive
HBsAg rapid test result is 5 times higher than that of women. The age group < 20 years old
has the highest rate of HBV infection. People infected with HBV according to blood group
showed mainly group O.
Conclusion: The rate of HBV positive among first-time blood donors is low, screening for HBV
by rapid test has many advantages but still has many limitations, not all cases of HBsAg carrier
can be screened.
